According to the Science Fcition Writers of America:
"As of today, eight days after the attacks on America, there remain no fatalities or injuries reported among the membership of SFWA. However, our field has not gone entirely unscathed.
*Douglas J. Stone, 1947-2001
Douglas Stone was vice-president of Odyssey Press, which prints and mails The New York Review of Science Fiction, the critical periodical edited by several noted SF names and recipient of several recent Hugo nominations for Best Semi-Prozine. Mr. Stone was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles on Tuesday, September 11, when it was rammed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. (For those unfamiliar with the NYC area, this was the first of the strikes, and the second building to fall.)
SFWA sends its deep condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Stone. The nation shares a part of its grief with them.
*Samuel Z. Arkoff, 1918-2001
In an unrelated passing, Samuel Z. Arkoff died on September 16 at the age of 83. Arkoff co-founded American International Pictures in 1954, and personally produced dozens of films, many of the B-movie type, often with SF and fantastic themes. His famous(and sometimes infamous) productions included It Conquered The World, The Amazing Colossal Man,
House of Usher, Reptilicus, Blacula, The Thing With Two Heads, and Futureworld, and his company distributed many others, including I Was A Teenage Werewolf and The Amityville Horror."
